Live Defense Stats — Full Mechanics Guide

How Live defensive modifiers actually stack and how much damage they cut: the six received-damage lines, percent vs flat defense, attribute soft-cap, physical weapon resist near 95%, AoE resist, armor green P.Def, and crit taken caps.

Received damage (−%)

There is no single “−damage taken” field. The client splits it into six Combat lines: normal attacks, P. Skills, and M. Skills, each for PvP and PvE.

Stacking formula

Treat the sheet value as a signed fraction (e.g. −0.14). New total:

P.Def / M.Def — flat vs percent

Two different numbers

Before

Flat P.Def / M.Def from effects (specialist lines, small Elset crumbs, etc.) — just added into the big total. On a 600k sheet, +30k flat is noise.

After

% P.Def / % M.Def — this is what cuts damage. P and M percent defense use the same damage math.

Amber’s “armor P.Def” green bonus is not the same bucket as random flat effect defense. Flat effect defense does not move when you swap Amber; the green armor bonus does.

If a limit grants +200% P.Def and another line grants +50%, do not add to +250%. Multiply:

Attribute defense

Six defense attributes (Holy / Dark / Fire / Water / Wind / Earth). Huge chunks live on sets; the rest is sprinkled across jewelry, stones, Dethrone spheres, and more.

Rough pipeline used in community sheets: take (your def attr − their atk attr) inside the ±225 band, scale (÷10 × ~1.48) into a defense-like bonus (up to ~66.6%), then convert with the same 1/(1+x)−1 style math into received-damage terms, hard-stopped near −40%.

Physical weapon resistance

One of the strongest PvP levers once you understand the curve.

  • Applies only when the hit is a physical skill or an auto-attack.
  • Magic (including bow-looking kits that actually nuke with M. Skills) ignores weapon resist entirely.

Damage curve

Think of remaining physical damage ≈ (1 − resist). Going from 60% → 74% resist means previous post-resist damage is cut again by ~35% (100 → ~65 on that baseline). Near the cap, tiny percent upgrades delete huge chunks of DPS.

Stance + Shining ≈ 45–50% less stray AoE. Geared knives that skip Counter Stance eat free VE / party AoEs for no reason.

Armor P.Def / M.Def (green bonus)

The green number on armor is a separate bonus layer on top of base piece defense. Sum the green P.Def on your armor pieces to see the pool.

Received crit damage uses the same stacking math as received damage. Equip a shirt for −20% received crit damage → crits hurt 20% less (after the multiply formula). Hitting −88% vs −90% still matters on the last steps, but the scary diminishing-return story people remember is mostly the weapon-resist curve — not this one.

  • Stop investing once you are at −90% received crit damage. No common debuff strips it.
  • Balance / “received physical crit rate” artifacts are mistranslated — they cut received crit rate for normal attacks, P. Skills, and M. Skills. A +4 / +7 piece is fine filler.

Worked examples

Convert every candidate into damage left. The examples isolate one layer for clarity; real hits pass through several applicable layers.

Example 1 — two received-damage items

You have generic received damage −14% and add a second generic −10% line. Multiply the remaining portions: 0.86 × 0.90 = 0.774. The displayed combined reduction is −22.6%, not −24%.

Example 2 — comparing +defense with received damage

A +25% P.Def option leaves 1/1.25 = 80% physical damage. A generic −20% received option also leaves 80%, but it can apply to magic as well. For physical hits they are equivalent before other stacking; their coverage differs.

Example 3 — weapon resist near the cap

At 80% bow resist, 20% of relevant bow damage remains. Moving to 85% leaves 15%. That five-point sheet gain cuts post-resist damage by 25%: 15 ÷ 20 = 0.75.

Example 4 — AoE plus other mitigation

A dagger has 30% AoE resist from Counter Stance and 15% from armor, for 45% additive AoE resist. If generic received damage already leaves 80%, an applicable AoE hit leaves 0.55 × 0.80 = 44% before defense, attribute, and critical layers.

  • If the attack is an M. Skill, remove P.Def and weapon resistance; use M.Def and the matching magic received/critical rows.
  • If it is single-target, remove AoE resistance. If it does not crit, remove received critical damage.
  • If your attribute defense does not cover the attacker, replace the assumed 0.60 with the real partial value or 1.00.

Take an unmodified death or combat-log sample, classify it, and compare the post-mitigation damage left. Do not purchase a generic 'tank item' without identifying which layer it changes.

  • Always compare defenses in “damage left,” not in face %.
  • Near weapon-resist and AoE caps, the last few percent are worth more than the first twenty.
  • Flat P.Def is a late-sheet dumpster. Buy % defense, received damage, attribute cover, and the resists that match who kills you.

A narrow defense can be excellent in the exact matchup and worthless outside it

FAQ

Does −5% received damage only hit one line?+

If the item says plain “received damage −5%” with no PvP/PvE or attack-type tag, it raises all six Combat lines. If it says “received damage from normal attacks in PvP,” only that cell moves.

Does bow resistance help against mage Isshek / magic nukes?+

No. Physical weapon resistance only applies to physical skills and auto-attacks. Magic ignores it completely.

Is +10% P.Def the same as −10% damage taken?+

No. +10% P.Def is about −9.1% damage taken. Formula: damage multiplier = 1 / (1 + def%). Multiple percent defense buffs multiply with each other.

Should I push received crit damage past −90%?+

No. Cap is −90%. It is cheap to reach — stop when you hit it. There are basically no common debuffs that strip received crit damage.

Do monsters crit?+

Yes, but they rarely have crit-rate bonuses, so it is uncommon. A small Balance-style received-crit-rate artifact still helps in PvP and is not wasted.
