Warg Guide: Armor, Skills & vs Samurai
Practical 'Warg' answers for Lineage II Live: how Heavy Armor Mastery actually works, when to wear heavy vs light, which rune-stone skills to buy first, how fist-profile relics work, and how Warg compares to 'Samurai' in PvE and PvP.
At a glance
- 1Heavy Armor Mastery: armor-gated lines only on heavy — the 'Additionally' lines work on any armor
- 2Early/mid: wear heavy and reach ~58% skill cooldown elsewhere for permanent Instinct
- 3Budget rune books: Giant Wolf (limits) · Power Surge · Sturdy Wolf
- 4Enhanced stones: Awakened Werewolf first; wolf-strike stance is for bosses/instances
- 5PvP edge to Warg · late Dethrone/ToI pack clear often favors Samurai
What this covers
Common Warg (Wolf) questions on Live: the heavy-armor passive, set choice, rune-stone priorities, relics, and a clean Samurai comparison — skill kits only, not cursed-weapon edge cases.
- Read Heavy Armor Mastery carefully — half the community still thinks it is broken.
- Pick armor for your content: defense first, then cooldown math for Instinct / Power Surge.
- Spend rune stones based on whether Warg is a farm twin or your main.
Heavy Armor Mastery — how it actually works
The passive is learned by default at character create. It always does something. The confusion is which lines need heavy armor.
Tooltip split
Before
Main block (before “Additionally”) — only while wearing heavy armor
After
“Additionally” block — works on heavy, light, robe, or no armor
Example values at mastery Lv.1 (scales with level)
| Block | What you get |
|---|---|
| Heavy only | Max HP +5% · P.Def +3% · normal critical damage taken −20% |
| Additionally (any armor) | STR +1 · dagger/bow resistance +2% · skill cooldown +3% |
Players swap light ↔ heavy, open the Details tab, see cooldown/STR unchanged, and conclude the passive is fake. Those lines never depended on the set. The HP / P.Def / crit-taken lines are the ones that require heavy.
Heavy vs light armor
- Heavy
- Higher raw defense from base stats, set bonuses, and modifies · full Heavy Armor Mastery package
- Light
- Less defense · set-style skill cooldown around +10% · easier to keep buffs rolling
- Instinct example
- Powerful damage buff · ~180s cooldown / ~60s duration before gear
Instinct (and similar amp skills) can be enchanted for cooldown and stacked with sheet cooldown until the buff is effectively permanent. A common early/mid PvE target is about 58% skill cooldown so Instinct never drops. Hardcore PvP players push further — Power Surge gaps as low as ~8 seconds are rumored on fully stacked sheets.
- Cooldown sources beyond light armor: Iss cooldown supports, Silenite, Aquamarine, Forgotten Power lines, specialty pieces, and skill enchant. You do not need light armor to hit 58%.
Recommendation
Before
New / mid accounts · PvE focus → heavy set, farm cooldown from other slots
After
Stacked PvP sheet or you already overcap defense → light set is fair game
Normal rune stones — what to learn first
Budget / moderate progression path. Each skill level you buy still adds a few percent damage (often ~4–6% per step early), so empty levels hurt — but Adena is finite.
| Priority | Skill (player name) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Giant Wolf (limits) | Boss / instance damage ceiling — always useful |
| 2 | Power Surge | Survival press for PvP or to live a dungeon finish |
| 3 | Sturdy Wolf | Party fields / instances · pairs well with Tanzanite-style sustain |
- Other normal-stone upgrades: buy as calendar/event free stones appear, or when the damage from the next skill level beats any World Trade piece you could buy for the same Adena.
Enhanced rune stones — the seven-stone budget
Warg can sink up to seven enhanced stones. You do not need all seven on a farm twin.
- Lv.110 passive
- Awakened Werewolf — 1 stone · always-on damage · stance-independent
- Replaceable stance
- Active that replaces Wolf Zone / Enhanced Mark · chance hit for ~500% P.Atk every 2nd–3rd swing
- When that stance shines
- Field bosses · undergeared instance clears when raw DPS is short
- When to skip it
- Normal open-world farms — free Lv.105 stances are enough for fields and most PvP
- Starting fresh and not running Arahmona / Freya / field bosses yet: buy only the Awakened Werewolf passive, then ride levels to 120.
- Lv.120 Werewolf rank
- Third rank of the same passive — more flat damage
- Shared Lv.120 passive
- 1 stone · ~+10% damage · +5% defense (every class has a version)
- Farm-twin total
- Three enhanced stones on passives only — excellent Adena machine
- Main character
- Also rank Giant Wolf and Wolf Strike for bosses · accept the 600s Giant Wolf cooldown
Spend plan
Before
Adena twin → passives only, gear does the rest
After
Main / all-content Warg → fill enhanced actives for instances and bosses
Rune-stone plans by role
Buy for the content the character actually clears. A farm twin needs always-on passive value; a boss main can justify long-cooldown stances that do nothing during ordinary field cycles.
Normal rune-stone priorities
| Role | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Later |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh farm Warg | Giant Wolf limits | Sturdy Wolf | Power Surge | Damage levels when cheaper than the next gear upgrade |
| Solo instance Warg | Giant Wolf limits | Power Surge | Sturdy Wolf | Fill damage skills used every boss window |
| Party boss Warg | Giant Wolf limits | Sturdy Wolf | Power Surge | Coordinate defensive uptime with support |
| Open-world PvP | Power Surge | Giant Wolf limits | Sturdy Wolf | Gap, silence, and pressure upgrades used in every fight |
| Adena twin with free stones | Always-on damage level | Giant Wolf | Sturdy Wolf | Stop before expensive niche actives |
Enhanced rune-stone budgets
| Budget | Buy | Skip for now | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 stone | Awakened Werewolf Lv.110 passive | Replaceable boss stance | Best always-on value |
| 3 stones by Lv.120 | Awakened ranks plus shared Lv.120 damage/defense passive | Long-cooldown actives | Efficient farm-twin package |
| 4–5 stones | Passives complete, then the active solving your current boss wall | Collection purchases with no active use | All-round PvE main |
| Full 7-stone main | Passives, Giant Wolf ranks, Wolf Strike/boss stance package | Nothing if Warg is the permanent main | Maximum boss and instance ceiling |
| PvP specialist | Passives first, then uptime/cover skills actually used in fights | Ten-minute PvE limit if no boss schedule | Less paper DPS, more usable pressure |
Value test for the next level
- Count how many minutes per hour the skill contributes. A 5% always-on passive can beat a much larger ten-minute-cooldown effect in normal farming.
- Price the same Adena against attribute, cooldown uptime, weapon, and defense. Rune levels are permanent, but permanent does not mean first.
- Do not buy a replacement stance merely because it is enhanced. The free Lv.105 field stance remains enough for many farms and PvP setups.
Relics — profile vs grade
Fist / castet profile is what turns on the third relic line for Warg. Wrong weapon type = only the first two lines (damage dealt / damage taken).
| Setup | What you actually get |
|---|---|
| A-grade off-profile (no fists) | Only two lines · roughly +20% damage & mitigation style package |
| A-grade off-profile + top profile B | Use the profile B — often ~30% / 30% effective package |
| Pre-top B profile | Often ~25% / 25% — still beats off-profile A |
| Off-profile A when you only have C | A is fine until a real B/profile piece appears |
Relic progression notes
Relic grade and weapon profile answer different questions. Grade strengthens the common lines; fist/castet profile unlocks the Warg-specific third line.
Which relic to equip
| Inventory choice | Equip | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Off-profile A vs fist-profile B (top B) | Fist-profile B | Third line plus a stronger effective package usually wins |
| Off-profile A vs weak fist-profile C | Off-profile A | Common-line grade value can carry until a real profile B appears |
| Two fist-profile B relics | Higher completed/effective lines | Profile is already solved; compare active values |
| Fist-profile A vs any off-profile A | Fist-profile A | Same grade plus class line is straightforward |
| Farm relic vs PvP relic, both profile | Match content | Damage dealt for farm; mitigation/control value for PvP |
- Read every active line after equipping. Do not trust border color or collection score to prove the third line is enabled.
- Keep the best off-profile grade until the profile relic crosses it. A future upgrade plan is not a reason to weaken today’s character.
- Re-test after relic advancement because line values can cross at different grades.
PvE armor and skill loadouts
PvE templates
| Content | Armor | Cooldown target | Skill plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open field leveling | Heavy | Enough for permanent Instinct; about 58% is a common reference | Free field stance, passives, auto/packing skills |
| Tower of Insolence | Heavy | Permanent Instinct plus recovery margin | Prioritize survival and stable targeting; do not spend boss stance on trash |
| Dethrone farm | Heavy until defense is solved | Instinct permanent; more only if another key window benefits | Pack tools and mobility; Samurai remains better at contested long-range packing |
| Solo instance | Heavy | Limits available for each damage check | Giant Wolf, boss stance if learned, Power Surge for lethal phase |
| Field boss / Superion | Heavy or proven light endgame set | Coordinate long limits | Full Giant Wolf and Wolf Strike package; maximize dual-hand hit volume |
| Farm twin | Heavy | Stable Instinct from cheap external sources | Three enhanced passives, no expensive niche stance |
- Cooldown sources
- Heavy Armor Mastery additional line · Iss package · Silenite · Greater Aquamarine · Forgotten Power · skill enchant · specialty gear
- Defense check
- If light armor forces potions, deaths, or a lower zone, its cooldown gain is negative farm value
- Damage check
- Once Instinct is permanent, compare raw damage/attribute before buying cooldown that changes no window
PvP loadouts and rotations
PvP Warg is built around usable Power Surge windows, untargeted movement, and enough defense to stay connected. Light armor is a late-sheet uptime choice, not the class default.
PvP templates
| Sheet | Armor | Priority | How it plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry PvP | Heavy | Survive burst, weapon resists, basic cooldown | Trade under Surge and disengage during gaps |
| Developed open world | Heavy | Surge cooldown, accuracy, gap tools | Use untargeted jump to enter without donating a predictable target |
| Stacked cooldown | Light optional | Near-continuous Surge and limits | Pressure through short cover gaps; requires defense from other slots |
| Anti-physical | Heavy | Relevant weapon resist and received crit lines | Force physical opponents into poor trades |
| Group PvP | Heavy or proven light | Follow target calls, silence/stun timing, defensive coordination | Do not spend Surge before the group commits |
Practical order
- Approach with the untargeted jump or terrain, not a long straight run under enemy focus.
- Trigger Power Surge for the real trade, then chain pressure and control while its protection matters.
- Use gap and silence tools to deny the opponent’s reset. Warg wins through repeated connected swings, not one decorative limit.
- When Surge drops, decide immediately: finish, cover with another defensive source, or leave. Standing in the same place without cover wastes the class advantage.
Warg vs Samurai
Skill kits only — ignore cursed weapons and whale one-shots for this comparison.
PvP
- Winner
- Warg
- Why
- Power Surge lasts longer than Samurai’s Atsumori-style cover (enchant/kit differences)
- Mobility
- Untargeted jump + gap stance / silence tools
- Samurai hole
- No comparable second cover or jump — soft in open fights
PvE & leveling
- Early game
- Warg — heavy armor passive, free early skills, damage not behind
- From 120
- Samurai can take Signet Lv.3 (four enhanced stones) and stack ~63% cooldown for permanent long-range (~850) AoE
- Boss / Superion DPS
- Warg usually higher — dual-hand swings + stance triggers raise hits/sec
- Tower of Insolence
- Warg can hold with losses or a geared bow swap
- Dethrone
- Samurai dominates contested packing — Warg has no real answer
Quick checklist
- Wear heavy until cooldown gear exists — do not panic when Details barely changes on swap.
- Aim ~58% skill cooldown for permanent Instinct in PvE.
- Normal stones: Giant Wolf → Power Surge → Sturdy Wolf.
- Enhanced: Awakened Werewolf (+ ranks) before fancy stances unless you are stuck on bosses.
- Fist-profile relics over higher off-profile grades.
